2008 Season Recap
For the 11th year in a row, the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team qualified for the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament. The Lyons squared off against Wellesley College in the quarterfinal round, falling 4-1. They closed out the 2008 season with an overall record of 9-7 and a league mark of 4-4.
With 11th year head coach Andy Whitcomb leading the way, Mount Holyoke picked up NEWMAC wins over Wheaton College, Smith College, Clark University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Lyons exploded out of the gate, posting victories in five of their first six contests. After falling in five of their next six outings, they regrouped to win their final three regular season matches.
In its 16-1 triumph over Elms College, Mount Holyoke established new program highs for goals in a game (16), assists in a game (11), points in a game (43), goals in the first half (6) and goals in the second half (10). First year forward Shara Robertson highlighted the offensive explosion, racking up nine points on four goals and an assist. Her point and goal totals both tied previous school records held by Bridget Gunn and Krista Lindquist, respectively.
Robertson became the second player in program history to earn the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year Award after tallying 25 points. She piled up a team best 11 goals and also added three helpers. Two of her goals went down as winners.
The Lyons also received solid production from senior midfielder Anne Doton, who collected eight goals and a club high 14 assists. In addition to earning NEWMAC All-Conference First Team accolades, she was voted to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-New England East First Team and was selected to represent Mount Holyoke at the 2008 NFHCA Division III Senior All-Star Game.
Junior forward Mary Kate Switchenko totaled ten goals and four assists en route to earning NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team honors.
