2008 Season Recap

In her first season at the helm of the Mount Holyoke College lacrosse team, head coach Miriam Esber led her team to an overall record of 2-13 and an 0-6 mark versus New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Foes. The Lyons qualified for the NEWMAC Tournament for the ninth year in a row. In the quarterfinal round, they were upended 22-5 by Springfield College.

Mount Holyoke edged Keene State College 13-12 for its first victory of the 2008 campaign. Junior midfielder Ava Gottschall tallied five goals to set the tone, and sophomore midfielder netted what proved to be the game winner with just under 11 minutes remaining in regulation. 
 
In its win over Norwich University, the Lyons established new program records for goals in a game (23) and points in a game (34). Sophomore Peggy Wefald fueled the high powered attack, posting career highs in all three major offensive categories. The midfielder finished with nine points on seven goals and a pair of assists. She was rewarded with NEWMAC Player of the Week honors after her performance.

Danielle BabcockFor the season, Wefald racked up team highs of 66 points, 54 goals, 12 assists, 71 draw controls and 21 caused turnovers. Gottschall also enjoyed an outstanding season, totaling 36 points on 29 goals and seven helpers. Cody chipped in with 11 goals. At the conclusion of the season, both Wefald and Gottschall were selected to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team.

Sophomore goalkeeper Mimi Henry was Mount Holyoke featured goalkeeper in 2008. In 683 minutes played, she recorded 128 saves and two wins. Classmate Gabriela Cabido Carr contributed 33 saves in 216 minutes played.

The Lyons were selected to receive the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row.
