The Mount Holyoke lacrosse program takes pride in a long history of success within the region and beyond. The program is increasingly competitive, and this year's schedule continues a tradition of carrying highly competitive teams. As a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), the team is annually pitted against nationally-respected opponents such as Springfield, Wheaton, and Babson. The team is striving to recapture the conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Tournament.

Lacrosse opened Lacrosseup the 2006-2007 season with a big win defeating Whittier College 20-5 during its spring break training trip to California.  The Lyons followed this game with a hard fought loss, 12-13, against University of Redlands. At the Seven Sister’s Championship, hosted by Wellesley, MHC took sixth place, falling to Vassar in the first round of play and posting a win against Cedar Crest. First year Megan “Peggy” Wefald and junior tri-captain Danielle Babcock were both named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament team for their performances during the tournament.  During regular season play, the team struggled against tough opponents and was unable to post a NEWMAC win.  In the first round of the NEWMAC tournament, the seventh-seeded Lyons were defeated by second seed Wellesley (16-4).  Senior captain Lisa Roberts lead the team on the defensive end of the field playing six games in goal totaling 71 saves. As a field player she tallied 41 ground balls and 33 caused turnovers.  Roberts also contributed on offense netting seven goals and two assists. Wefald was named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Second Team after a successful rookie campaign. Wefald led the team in scoring during the 2007 season, notching 57 goals and 11 assists and was also impressive off the draw, tallying 48 draw controls, second-best in the NEWMAC. The team was honored with the first annual NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship Award is given to the team that best demonstrates the ideals of sportsmanship and the NEWMAC Code of Conduct, regardless of overall record or season finish.

Lacrosse begins each year with a fall non-traditional season in which the team trains three times a week for a period of five weeks, and competes the final weekend of the season. "Fall ball" is an invaluable opportunity for players to hone their technical skills before the start of the traditional season in the spring. Team tryouts are held in mid-February, and the regular season generally runs through the first week in May. In 2007, the team will travel to California to train over spring break, before returning to Wellesley, Massachusetts for the annual Seven Sisters Championship.

As a Mount Holyoke scholar-athlete, you are driven to excel in the athletic arena as well as the classroom and laboratory. The discipline, sense of accomplishment, and competitive edge that you bring to your sport resonate through every channel of your intellectual life.

The desire to achieve -- it's all part of the mind-body connection.
