2008-09 Season Recap
Under the direction of 25th year head coach C.J. Law, the Mount Holyoke College riding team enjoyed a dominant 2008-09 season. The Lyons returned to the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) National Championships for the 18th time in program history, taking sixth place overall. They finished atop the Zone 1, Region 3 standings and later secured the Zone 1 High Point Championship.
Out of their eight regular season shows, they picked up four High Point Championships and three Reserve High Point Championships.
Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was Cassie Herman. After winning the Zone 1, Region 3 Cacchione Cup High Point Championship, the senior captured the Zone 1 Cacchione Cup Reserve High Point Championship. She took part in the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Cacchione Cup but did not place. During the regular season, she was crowned High Point Rider once and Reserve High Point Rider on two occasions.
In addition to Herman, junior Mignon Johnston (walk/trot/canter), sophomore Elizabeth Tripp (intermediate) and junior Tracy Mack (open) also qualified for the National Championships in their respective divisions. Johnston became a national champion by taking first place in the individual walk/trot/canter hunter seat equitation division.
Mount Holyoke also received solid production from first year Margaret Swanson, sophomore JoJo Gutfarb and junior Lora Ciborowski. Swanson was named High Point Rider at both the University of Massachusetts (fall) and Amherst College Shows. Meanwhile, Gutfarb grabbed high Point Riders at the Smith College Show, and Ciborowski earned High Point Intermediate Rider accolades at the Amherst Show.
A total of ten Lyons qualified for the Zone 1, Region 3 Championships. Of those, five went on to compete in the Zone 1 Championships.
