2008 Season Recap
Under the direction of second year head coach Kanae Haneishi, the Mount Holyoke College soccer team posted an overall record of 6-11-1 and a league mark of 3-6-0 in 2008. The Lyons qualified for the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the first time since 2005. They played to a 1-1 draw with second seeded Wheaton College in the quarterfinal round before eventually falling in penalty kicks. For the third season in a row, they were selected to receive the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award.
Mount Holyoke was paced by Yuko Takahashi, who became the first player in program history to earn the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year Award. The center midfielder made an immediate impact on the program, recording 23 points on nine goals and five assists. She exploded for two goals and a helper in the Lyons 5-1 win over the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The first year also found the net twice in her team’s 3-0 victory over Elms College. Her first tally of that match proved to be the winner. Takahashi was voted to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team.
Junior Lauren Orr was also a force at the offensive end for Mount Holyoke in 2008. The forward collected seven goals and six assists. In the Lyons 4-2 triumph over Lesley University, she racked up two goals and one assist. She repeated the feat in the team’s 3-1 win over Clark University. Orr was responsible for the winner in both contests.
Senior forward Emmy Fontaine found the net four times, while junior midfielder Perry Markell added three goals and three assists.
Junior Elaine Harvey was Mount Holyoke’s featured goalkeeper. In 1487 minutes played, she posted a goals against average of 2.00 and a save percentage of .764. She was aided on the defensive end by junior Terry Orr and sophomore Colleen Regal.
