2004 GAME HIGHLIGHTS APRIL 27 VS. WESLEYAN - Mount Holyoke lost its last game of the season to non-conference opponent Wesleyan, 5-7. After a scoreless three innings of play, Wesleyan pulled ahead with two runs in the top of the fourth frame. The Cardinals added five more runs in the fifth inning, smacking five hits and capitalizing on one error by MHC. In a timely substitution, sophomore pitcher Lynn Kapinos provided relief for the Lyons, forcing a pop fly by Wesleyan's Sue Frost to end the inning. MHC got on board with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Wesleyan's pitcher walked four batters, threw a wild pitch, and hit one batter. Elizabeth Colby delivered the first run on a bases loaded walk, and Karen Loweth drove in two runs with a shot to center field. Loweth batted 3-for-4 for the game. Mount Holyoke rallied two more runs in the last inning off hard-throwing relief pitcher Molly Gaebe, but couldn't overcome the deficit. Gaebe threw four strikeouts in two innings pitched for Wesleyan. Melanie Lafavre gave up nine hits and four earned runs for Mount Holyoke, dropping her season record to 4-12. Kapinos allowed no runs and no hits through 2.1 innings pitched. APRIL 20 VS. SPRINGFIELD (NEWMAC Quarterfinals) - Sixth-seeded Mount Holyoke ends its NEWMAC season with a heartbreaking 1-2 loss to #3 seed Springfield in the first round of the conference championship. The Pride struck first in the opening inning, with a one-run double. MHC tied it up in the top of the fifth off two Springfield errors, sending home pinch runner Eli D'Agosto. SC responded in the bottom of the frame with a game-winning pinch-hit home run. Pitcher Lynn Kapinos (5-8) gave up seven hits, one walk, and two earned runs through six innings for MHC. Kapinos also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Springfield's pitcher allowed four hits and struck out two batters for the win. APRIL 17 VS. BABSON - The Lyons split their doubleheader with Babson, dropping the first game, 0-1, and winning the second, 4-0. Game #1 - Babson earned its winning run in the fifth inning, reaching base on an error and scoring on a wild pitch. Elizabeth Colby batted 2-for-3 for MHC, while Karen Loweth hit a double for the game. Pitcher Melanie Lafavre (4-11) struck out three and walked one while giving up three hits through six innings. Babson pitcher Meg Gaskell (9-3) also allowed three hits and struck out three Lyons for the win. Game #2 - MHC retaliated in the second game, smacking eight hits total, including two doubles and one RBI by Jean Bopp, who went 3-for-3 at the plate. Lauren Weiner also earned one double for MHC. The Lyons went up 1-0 in the second inning off a single by Shannon Graham. They added three more runs in the sixth to clinch the game. Lynn Kapinos (5-7) was spectacular on the mound, allowing just two hits and one walk through seven innings of play. Babson pitcher Georgia Howe allowed four earned runs, dropping to 1-1 this season with the loss. APRIL 16 VS. WPI - Mount Holyoke swept WPI in this NEWMAC doubleheader, 5-1 in the first game and 4-3 in the nightcap. Game #1 - The Engineers led off the first inning with one run, but the Lyons retaliated with a run of their own on a base hit by Jean Bopp, scoring Elizabeth Colby. Stephanie Wohler drove in the winning run in the second inning, grounding out to first but scoring Karen Loweth. Lynn Kapinos batted 2-for-3 for MHC, and pitched a complete game for the Lyons. She gave up five hits and one earned run, lifting her record to 3-7. WPI pitcher Meghan Kelly allowed six hits and three earned runs, dropping her record to 8-8 this season. Game #2 - Mount Holyoke took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, highlighted by Elizabeth Colby's two-run double, her first of two doubles for the game. Overall, Colby batted 3-for-3, while Kapinos batted 2-for-2 for MHC. Kapinos (4-7) earned her second win of the day, throwing three strikeouts and no walks, and allowing two earned runs through seven innings pitched. WPI mounted a comeback in the fourth and fifth innings, tallying a combined seven hits and three runs, but leaving two runners on base in each frame. WPI pitcher Stephanie Morin allowed eight hits and four earned runs through 4.1 innings of play, bringing her season record to 3-9. APRIL 15 VS. SMITH - MHC was swept by Smith in this NEWMAC doubleheader, 0-2 in the first game and 5-13 in the nightcap. Game #1 - The Pioneers earned their two winning runs in the top of the fifth inning. Smith pitcher Katie Maroney threw five strikeouts and allowed three hits to lift her record to 13-2 this season. For Mount Holyoke, Lynn Kapinos gave up five hits and two earned runs, dropping her record to 2-6. Game #2 - Smith's bats came alive in the second inning, as the Pioneers tallied seven hits and seven runs to put them ahead for good. Overall, Smith smacked 14 hits for the game, five for extra bases. With the score 10-0 after three innings, MHC avoided the 8-run rule by earning three runs in the fourth. With two outs, Tracy Gardner sparked the Lyons with a line drive to left field. Melanie Lafavre then doubled to left field for an RBI, and Chloe Pete and Lauren Weiner followed suit with RBIs of their own. Overall, MHC managed six hits for the game. Smith pitcher Lauren Perry (6-0) hurled six strikeouts and allowed five earned runs through six innings pitched, maintaining her undefeated record this season. Kapinos (2-7) pitched the first 1.2 innings for Mount Holyoke, allowing six earned runs for the loss. Reliever Lafavre gave up five earned runs and threw two strikeouts through 5.1 innings. APRIL 10 VS. CLARK - Mount Holyoke split its doubleheader with Clark, losing the first game, 0-7, and winning the second, 2-0. Game #1 - The Cougars scattered their runs in the first game, scoring in all but two innings of play. The game-winner came in the second frame, when Clark singled to left field, sending in a runner on third. Melanie Lafavre allowed 10 hits and three earned runs on five errors by Mount Holyoke to give Clark its first NEWMAC win of the season. Lynn Kapinos batted 2-for-3 for MHC. Game #2 - First-year Sara Yoshino led MHC past Clark with a 2-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning, sending in pinch runner Eli D'Agosto and Karen Loweth. Loweth batted 2-for-3 for Mount Holyoke. Sophmore pitcher Lynn Kapinos (2-5) kept Clark scoreless, keeping the Cougars to just two hits through seven innings to claim her second win of the season. APRIL 9 VS. COAST GUARD - The Lyons were swept by Coast Guard in this NEWMAC doubleheader, 0-9 in the first game (5 innings) and 1-9 in the second game (6 innings). Game #1 - Elizabeth Colby earned the lone hit for MHC in the first game, as Coast Guard's pitcher struck out five and walked none in this one-hitter. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and scored four more in the third and fourth frames to win the game in five innings. Mount Holyoke committed five errors for the game. Melanie Lafavre allowed five hits and two earned runs through the first 2.1 innings, dropping her record to 4-9 this season. Game #2 - Mount Holyoke earned three hits in the second game (Chloe Pete, Jean Bopp and Melanie Lafavre). The Lyons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, when Bopp led off with a double and scored on a ground out by Shannon Graham. Coast Guard rallied back with seven runs in the bottom of the frame. The Bears added one run in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game early (8-run rule). Pitcher Karen Loweth gave up six hits, nine walks, and three earned runs through 5.1 innings to bring her season record to 0-2. APRIL 6 VS. AMHERST - Mount Holyoke lost a close game in the bottom of the 6th inning to local rival Amherst, 2-3. Amherst started the game with one run in the first frame, and led until the 6th inning, when the Lyons tied it up on a single by Lynn Kapinos, sending in pinch runner Helen Fallat. The Jeffs regained the lead in the bottom of the 6th, when Caroline Polales smashed a two-run homer to make it a 3-1 game. MHC fought back, hitting three consecutive singles in the top of the 7th to pull within one run, but Amherst notched three outs in a row to clinch the game. Chloe Pete led the Lyons at the plate, batting 3-for-4 and earning one RBI. Pitcher Melanie Lafavre (4-8) allowed five hits and two earned runs, while Amherst hurler Miya Warner (8-4) struck out 10 batters and allowed eight hits. Mount Holyoke committed three errors and left nine runners on base; Amherst went errorless and stranded four. APRIL 3 VS. MIT - The Lyons gained their first NEWMAC wins of the season, defeating MIT in both games of this conference double-header, 6-1 and 4-3. In Game #1, the Lyons came out strong, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Lauren Weiner batted 3-for-4, including one double and one triple, and earned three RBIs for the game. All nine batters earned hits for MHC. Pitcher Melanie Lafavre allowed just one run by MIT, and lifted her record to 4-7 with the win. In Game #2, MIT came out strong, taking a 2-1 lead after the first inning of play. MHC tied it up in the fourth, but MIT pulled ahead again in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Mount Holyoke's Lauren Weiner drove in the game-winning runs with a fly ball that dropped between first base and right field, sending in Helen Fallat and Chloe Pete to end the game. Weiner again hit 3-for-4 at the plate for Mount Holyoke. On the mound, sophomore Lynn Kapinos earned her first collegiate win for MHC, lifting her season record to 1-5. The Engineers left 11 runners on base, while Mount Holyoke stranded five. APRIL 2 VS. SPRINGFIELD - The Lyons fell to Springfield in both games of this conference double-header, 4-14 in game #1 (five innings) and 6-10 in game #2 (six innings). In Game #1, MHC started off strong, scoring three runs in the first inning of play. The Pride retaliated with four runs in the second inning, and added 10 more to end the game early. Mari Carriedo went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs for Mount Holyoke. Three pitchers spent time on the mound for the Lyons, each allowing at least three runs and one earned run. Lynn Kapinos pitched just 0.2 innings, but was given the loss as she allowed six hits and eight runs, including the go-ahead run, in the bottom of the second inning. In Game #2, Mount Holyoke again started off swinging, scoring four runs the first inning and leading 4-3 after two. The Pride tied it up in the third inning, and sealed the win with five more runs in their last two at-bats. Mount Holyoke's leading batter Chloe Pete went 3-for-4 at the plate to lift her batting average to .423 this season. Lauren Weiner earned two hits in three attempts. Karen Loweth pitched a complete game for MHC, and earned her first loss of the season. She allowed eight earned runs and nine hits, and threw eight walks and three strikeouts for the game. MARCH 30 VS. ELMS - Mount Holyoke ends Elms' four-game winning streak with a 5-3 win today. The Lyons came out strong at the plate, smacking nine of their 10 hits and scoring all five runs in just the first two innings of play. Seven of MHC's nine earned hits on the day, with Chloe Pete, Jean Bopp and Elizabeth Colby earning two hits apiece. Bopp and Karen Loweth each tallied two RBIs in this non-conference win. Earning extra bases for the Lyons were Bopp and Lynn Kapinos with one double each, and Colby with a triple. Pitcher Melanie Lafavre lifted her record to 3-7, throwing two strikeouts and allowing four hits in the win. Kapinos earned her first save of the season, keeping the Blazers hitless and scoreless through the last three innings of play. MARCH 27 VS. WHEATON - Mount Holyoke lost its first NEWMAC games of the season to Wheaton, 0-9 in the first game (5 innings) and 1-3 in the second game. In the first game, Wheaton scored two runs in the 1st inning and seven runs in the 2nd to seal the win. Senior Jean Bopp earned one hit for MHC. Senior pitcher Melanie Lafavre allowed 14 hits and seven earned runs to fall to 2-7 this season. In the second contest, Wheaton again scored two runs in the opening inning. Mount Holyoke responded in the second by loading the bases with one out before first-year Shannon Graham sent a sac fly to center field to make it a 2-1 game. Sophomore Elizabeth Colby earned the lone run for MHC, while Wheaton added an insurance run in the fifth to gain its second shutout of the day. Sophomore Lynn Kapinos allowed five hits and one earned run on the mound, as she drops to 0-4-1 this season. MARCH 26 VS. SIMMONS - The Lyons won their home-opener versus Simmons, avenging their 15-4 loss to the Sharks earlier this season. Lauren Weiner smacked a lead-off double in the bottom of the 4th inning, and earned the lone run for Mount Holyoke off a single by Elizabeth Colby. Simmons left three runners on base as MHC played solid defense to keep the Sharks scoreless. Pitcher Melanie Lafavre struckout one batter and allowed three hits to earn her second win of the season. MARCH 15-22: SPRING TRAINING TRIP - The Lyons played 11 games in Fort Myers, Florida for spring training this year, and came home with a 1-9-1 record. First-year Chloe Pete leads the Lyons in hitting and stealing, with a batting average of .429 and three stolen bases. Lynn Kapinos and Stephanie Wohler have each posted 10 hits this season, batting .370. Wohler leads the team in both RBI's (3) and triples (2), and Kapinos tops the putout column at first base, tallying 54 so far this season. On the mound, Kapinos (0-0) has hurled 11 strikeouts and holds an ERA of 5.73 through 29.1 innings, while starter Melanie Lefavre (1-6) has an ERA of 8.06 through 33 innings. |
