2007-08 Season Recap

The ascent of the Mount Holyoke College squash program continued in 2008, as fourth year head coach Pamela Saunders led the team to another impressive season. Paced by junior Pamela Anckermann and first year Vidushi Gurunada, the Lyons finished with an overall record of 17-5 for the second year in a row. In the final College Squash Association (CSA) national poll, Mount Holyoke ranked 11th, a new school record.

A total of six Lyons ended the year with rankings in the top 100 nationally. Anckermann led the way at number 28, and Gurunada followed at number 32. The duo posted dual-match records of 16-1 and 19-3, respectively. Mount Holyoke also received a boost from junior Menusha Hettiarachchi, who went 19-3 in dual-match play. Meanwhile, classmate Laura Robinson went 17-4.

Squash TeamThe Lyons were at their best midway through the season, when they found the win column eight straight times. After compiling a perfect 5-0 mark at their home invitational, they cruised to their second consecutive Seven Sisters Championship at Smith College the following weekend. Seven members of the team earned All-Tournament Team accolades.

At the Howe Cup Mount Holyoke competed in the “B” Division. After downing Colby College 7-2 in the opening round of the tournament, which was hosted by Princeton University, the Lyons suffered an 8-1 setback versus Cornell University in the semifinals. They then rebounded to edge Bates College 5-4 in the consolation contest.

Mount Holyoke's top performances at the CSA Individual Championships came from Robinson and Hettiarachchi, who both advanced to play matches on the third day. Robinson moved on to the semifinals of the Holleran Cup second consolation draw, and Hettiarachchi advanced all the way to the championship of the Holleran Cup third round consolation.
