2008-09 Season Recap

The ascent of the Mount Holyoke College squash program continued in 2008-09, as first year head coach Allen Fitzsimmons led the team to a record of 15-7. Paced by senior Pamela Anckermann, the Lyons finished with a College Squash Association (CSA) ranking of 11th nationally.

After compiling a perfect 3-0 mark at their home invitational, Mount Holyoke cruised to its third consecutive Seven Sisters Championship the following weekend. Nine members of the team earned All-Tournament accolades at the event.

Mount Holyoke competed in the “B” Division of the Howe Cup National Championships. After downing Bates College 7-2 in the opening round of the tournament, the Lyons suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 setback versus Dartmouth College in the semifinals. They then rebounded to defeat Bowdoin College 7-2 in the consolation contest.

2009 Squash Seven SistersAt the conclusion of the tournament, Anckermann was presented with the prestigious Betty Richey Award, which is handed out annually to the best all around senior collegiate squash player in the nation. Anckermann was the first player in program history to earn the honor. During her senior season, she dropped just five games en route to a dual match record of 21-1. She finished her career with a record of 78-2.

A total of four Lyons ended the year with rankings in the top 100 nationally. Joining Anckermann (24) were sophomore Vidushi Gurunada (44), junior Laura Robinson (73) and first year Shara Robertson (99). Gurunada amassed a dual match record of 17-3, while Robinson and Robertson went 16-5 and 13-9, respectively. All four players represented Mount Holyoke at the CSA Individual Championships.
