2008-09 Season Recap

Following the lead of 16th year head coach Aldo Santiago, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team advanced to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the fifth year straight year during its 2008-09 campaign. The Lyons took on Babson College in the quarterfinal round, falling 5-1. They wrapped up their season with an overall record of 10-8 and a league mark of 3-4.

During the fall portion of its schedule, Mount Holyoke accumulated a record of 5-5. In non-conference play, the Lyons raced past Simmons College 7-2 and edged Connecticut College 5-4. They then downed Smith College 6-3, Clark University 9-0 and Springfield College 8-1 in league play. Juniors Beatrix Hartmann and Sarah London led the way, gathering eight and seven singles wins, respectively. The duo teamed up to post seven doubles triumphs.

Ashley FallonMount Holyoke wrapped up its season with eight matches in the spring. The Lyons clinched third place at the Seven Sisters Championship behind 3-2 triumphs over Bryn Mawr College and Smith College. They then closed out their year with 6-3 victories over Roger Williams University, Suffolk University and Union College to run their spring mark to 5-3.

Leading the way during the spring was senior Ashley Fallon, who picked up four singles wins and a pair of doubles triumphs. Sophomore Natalie Hsiang and first year Sarah Moore came up with four doubles wins apiece, while first year Kara Matsuzawa added four singles victories. Sophomore Elise Marifian chipped in with three singles and two doubles wins.
