2007-08 Season Recap

Under the direction of 15th year head coach Aldo Santiago, the Mount Holyoke College tennis team advanced to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the fourth year in a row in the fall of 2007. The Lyons took on Babson College in the quarterfinal round, falling 5-1. They wrapped up their fall slate with an overall record of 3-8 and a league mark of 2-5.

Mount Holyoke raced past Western New England College 8-1 for its first victory of the season. The Lyons downed Springfield College 6-3 in dramatic fashion for their second triumph of the year. Trailing 3-0 after doubles play, they rebounded to sweep the singles matches. They then secured a spot in the postseason with an 8-1 win over Clark University.

Sophomore Sarah London posted a 6-4 singles record for Mount Holyoke. The Lyons also received a boost from classmate Beatrix Hartmann, who went 5-6 in singles play, including a 5-1 mark at the number five slot. The duo teamed up to accumulate a 5-6 record as a doubles team.

Sarah LondonSenior Meaghan Sloane and first year Natalie Hsiang were also effective contributors for Mount Holyoke in the fall of 2007. As a doubles pairing, they went 4-6. Sloane amassed four singles victories while Hsiang tallied three. Sophomore Eleni Scordilis chipped in with four singles wins, all at the number six position.

The Lyons resumed play in the spring of 2008, competing in nine matches. In their opener, they suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 setback versus NCAA Division III Tournament bound SUNY New Paltz in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Mount Holyoke then returned to the mainland to compete in the Seven Sisters Championship at Wellesley College. By way of their 3-2 victory over Smith College, the Lyons secured fourth place at the tournament. They went on to capture three wins in their final four matches of the spring. In addition to a 9-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer College and a 5-4 win over Springfield, they edged Roger Williams University 5-4. Like SUNY New Paltz, Roger Williams also qualified for the National Tournament.

Mount Holyoke finished with a spring mark of 4-5. London and Hartmann continued their strong play, accumulating matching singles records of 3-2. They went 7-2 at the number two doubles position. First year Elise Marifian made an immediate impact on the program, posting three singles wins. She teamed up with Scordilis to go 3-1 at the third doubles slot. Sloane and Hsiang chipped in with four triumphs at the number one doubles position.
