2008 Volleyball Blog - Week 7
by Amanda Trask - October 28, 2008
With the season soon coming to an end, the volleyball team is trying to make the most of our time together, both on and off the court. The field hockey team’s “Game of the Week” was this past Saturday. However, since the volleyball team had its Annual Hall of Fame tournament, we knew we would not be able to go. We wanted to help out, so when it came time to pick something to do on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee’s list of responsibilities, we chose to chalk it up! In other words, we decorated the sidewalk up to the turf with colorful chalk, thanking our trustees and wishing luck to all the girls on the team. The trustees were going to be at this game to dedicate our new outdoor facility, so it was a really special event for Mount Holyoke Athletics. It was also a special day for the field hockey team, because it was their Senior Day. Kara and Tyler gave a special shout out to each girl on the team, writing every name from the roster of over 25 people! Sadly, some of it got washed away in the rain, but you could still see a faint hint of our chalking extravaganza when it came time for the ceremony.

While the field hockey events were happening, our team was busy playing three challenging matches in the Hall of Fame tournament against Middlebury College, Bridgewater State College and Westfield State College. After working hard in all of the games, we gathered for our annual Family and Friends Potluck Dinner on Saturday night. Fortunately, the Hall of Fame tournament always coincides with Family and Friends Weekend at Mount Holyoke, so many people on the team had parents here who were able to watch our games and attend the dinner. We had family come from all over, ranging from St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, to San Francisco, California. We held the party in the Betty Shabazz House on campus, and it was really a perfect place to have our dinner, because it has a great function room and is right near the gym. Thanks to our parents and friends, we had yummy treats, including baba ganoush, tortellini salad with sun-dried tomatoes and a delicious raspberry trifle. I think it is safe to say that everyone had a pretty good time. It was great to meet the families that are new to our volleyball family, as well as see the families returning from last year.

We are looking forward to our “Game of the Week” tonight against Smith College. Apparently, it is Hawaiian themed! So come and join us in your leis, grass skirts and coconut bras. It’s going to be quite the party!
