2007 Season Recap
In 2007, the Mount Holyoke College volleyball team advanced to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the second straight season and fourth time in the last five years. After opening the fall with five wins in 14 tries, the Lyons dropped 12 straight to close the year. They finished with an overall record of 5-21 and a league mark of 1-8. At the conclusion of the season, head coach Peer Nasseir’s squad was selected to receive the NEWMAC’s annual team Sportsmanship Award.
Mount Holyoke was at its best midway through the season, when it captured three wins in five outings. Included in the streak were back-to-back shutout victories over Salem State College and WPI as well as a 3-0 triumph over Elms College. The Lyons win over Elms was their second of the fall, as they downed the Blazers 3-0 in the clubs’ first meeting. Mount Holyoke also found the win column in their season opener, when it downed Simmons College 3-1.
In addition to their always competitive Conference slate, the Lyons also competed in four in-season tournaments. They participated in the Salem State Invitational, the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Vassar College and the Smith College Invitational. Mount Holyoke also hosted the annual Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament. Sophomore middle blocker Teresa Campbell posted 1.96 kills per game and a hitting percentage of .219 to pace the squad in 2007. The team also received a boost from classmate Kendall Burns, who racked up 2.48 kills and 2.97 digs per game from the outside hitter position. Playing in her final collegiate campaign, senior setter Rachel West dished out 6.89 assists per game to go with 1.78 digs per game. She wrapped up her career with 1,982 assists, the second highest output in program history.
On the defensive side of the ball junior libero Kathryne Schwartz gathered a club-best 4.21 digs per game, while Campbell and junior middle blocker Brenna Shepherd came up with 33 and 30 blocks, respectively. Meanwhile, first year outside hitter Rosa Marruffo piled up 73 service aces to spark the Lyons service game.
