The latest Mount Holyoke College Friends of Athletics Newsletter is now available for download. Featured in this issue are the renovation of the College's swimming and diving facility as well as recaps and highlights from the the 2007-08 seasons. The 11th annual Friends of Athletics Golf Tournament is slated for Monday, September 8.

Beth SomersetBeth Somerset Named Head Indoor Track and Field Coach
The Mount Holyoke College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Beth Somerset as its head indoor track and field coach. Somerset will also serve as an assistant coach for both the cross country and outdoor track and field squads at the College. Her duties will begin in late August.

The Mount Holyoke College Department of Athletics hosted its annual awards celebration on Wednesday evening in Chapin Auditorium. Individuals from all 14 varsity teams were honored. Associate Athletic Director Lori Hendricks served as the event's emcee.

Catherine RiffinCross Country Team Earns National Academic Honors
The Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team was recently selected to receive United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association "All-Academic Team" honors. In addition, seniors Meghan Lynch and Catherine Riffin were named to the NCAA Division III USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.

NCAA LogoCross Country Nabs 13th Place at New England Regionals
The Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team ran to a 13th place finish at today's NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. Senior Halaina Demba crossed the line in 22:48, good for 42nd place overall. Amherst College (40 points) captured the team title at the event, which was hosted by Connecticut College at Harkness State Park.

NEWMAC LogoFall Academic All-Conference Squads Named by NEWMAC
The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) recently announced its 2007 Fall Academic All-Conference Teams. Twenty-five Mount Holyoke College student-athletes were recognized for their achievements in their respective sports as well as in the classroom. Academic All-Conference Teams were selected for the sports of cross country, field hockey, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

Mount Holyoke College senior Halaina Demba earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Cross Country All-Conference accolades following a 13th place finish at the Conference Championships last weekend. She was amongst the 14 student-athletes to be honored. In addition to Demba's individual accolades, the Mount Holyoke cross country team was selected to receive the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award.

NEWMAC LogoCross Country Grabs Fifth Place at NEWMAC Championship
Battling against rainy conditions, the Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team earned a fifth place finish at the 2007 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, hosted by Smith College this morning. Senior Halaina Demba was the Lyons top individual finisher, as she took home 13th place with a time of 20:01.00. By way of her top 14 finish, she earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors.

Meghan LynchCross Country Nabs First Place at Seven Sisters Invitational
Led by senior Catherine Riffin, the Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team raced to the team title in this afternoon's Seven Sisters Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College. It was the Lyons first win at the event since 1999. Ironically, Wellesley was also the host school that year.

For the second week in a row senior Catherine Riffin turned in a stellar performance for the Mount Holyoke College women's cross country team, finishing in tenth place with a time of 23:39 at the Connecticut College Invitational. Racing against some of the top teams in the northeast at Harkness Memorial State Park, the Lyons captured a seventh place team finish.
