2007 Season Recap
Under the direction of 22nd year head coach Tina Lee, the Mount Holyoke College cross country team competed in seven events in 2007. Seniors Halaina Demba and Catherine Riffin earned top team honors three times apiece to lead the way.
The Lyons kicked off their season with a seventh place finish at the Smith College Invitational. Senior Meghan Lynch completed the 5K course in 21:49.89 to pace the team. She took 30th place out of 150 runners.
Mount Holyoke delivered a 19th place finish at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational. Leading the way for the Lyons was Demba, who took 70th place out of 222 runners with a time of 20:08. Riffin captured top honors in the sub-varsity race.
Riffin was at it again the following week, finishing in tenth place with a time of 23:39 at the Connecticut College Invitational. The team turned in a seventh place showing at the event. Riffin continued her outstanding season at the New England Championships, claiming 96th place out of 299 runners with a time of 19:56. Of the 44 teams in the competition, the Lyons finished 24th.
Mount Holyoke’s top performance of the year came at the Seven Sisters Invitational (Wellesley College). Led by Riffin (4th, 19:13), the Lyons raced to the team title. It was their first win at the event since 1999.
Battling against rainy conditions, Mount Holyoke earned a fifth place finish at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship (Smith College). Demba was the team’s top individual finisher, taking home 13th place with a time of 20:01.00. By way of her top 14 finish, she earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors. For the second year in a row, the Lyons received the league’s Sportsmanship Award at the conclusion of the event.
Mount Holyoke rounded out its slate with a 13th place showing at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. Demba crossed the line in 22:48, good for 42nd place overall.
