2008 Season Recap

With 23rd year head coach Tina Lee at the helm, the Mount Holyoke College cross country squad competed in eight events in 2008. Senior Jessamyn Rising and sophomore Rebecca Engell earned top team honors four times apiece to lead the way. The Lyons were selected to receive the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Sportsmanship Award for the third consecutive year.

Mount Holyoke kicked off its season with a tenth place finish at the Trinity College Invitational. Four members of the team placed in the top 100 overall. Leading the way was Engell, whose time of 18:19 was good for 37th place overall.

The Lyons were at their best the following weekend, when they notched a sixth place result at the Smith College Invitational. Engell posted a 15th place time of 21:19.99. Meanwhile, Rising crossed the line in 22:08.09 to secure 27th place.

Cross CountryEngell once again set the tone for Mount Holyoke at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Shriners Invitational. She grabbed 76th place behind a personal best time of 19:49. Rising also established a new personal record with her 87th place time of 19:57. Of the 41 teams in the competition, the Lyons finished 17th.

After taking 13th place at the Williams College Invitational, Mount Holyoke finished 42nd at the New England Cross Country Championship. The team added a sixth place result at the Seven Sisters Championship.

Led by Rising, the Lyons placed eighth at the NEWMAC Championship. The senior took home 22nd place overall with a time of 19:59.86. Engell chipped in with a 34th place result, crossing the line in 20:23.39.

Mount Holyoke picked up 29th place in its season finale at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship. Rising led the Lyons with a time of 25:47.1, which was good for 117th place overall. Engell posted a 122nd place result, while first year Emily Follo tallied 162nd place.
