Self Assessment
One of the first steps for beginning your career exploration is to learn more about yourself. Completing a self assessment can help you connect your skills and interests with job and career possibilities.
Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
What is the MBTI?
The purpose of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people’s lives. The essence of the theory is that much seemingly random variation in behavior is quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment.
Why should I take it?
Understanding your Personality Type can assist your career development in a number of ways. It can help you select a career field that is a good fit for your personality make-up. Also, knowing your Personality Type will aid you in your job search; both in marketing yourself and in evaluating opportunities. It can also give you great insight into how you will approach your job search.
Where can I take it and how do I get my results?
To take the MBTI, log into LyonNet, note the MBTI login and password, then go to SkillsOne. SkillsOne is the company that administers this assessment for the CDC. Enter the login and password (leave User ID blank) and read the directions and get started. To get your results, call the CDC at 413-538-2080 to find out about group interpretation workshops or to schedule an individual appointment.
What will it tell me?
The MBTI will focus on your personality, specifically dimensions including where you get your energy, how you look at the world, the factors that you include when making decisions and how you prefer to structure your time, space and self. It does NOT focus on strengths and weaknesses, skills, or values. It also doesn’t measure your sanity. There is no right or wrong answer with this assessment, it is NOT a test.
Can I just take a similar free assessment online instead?
No, these results are not guaranteed to be accurate. The official MBTI is a psychological tool that has been evaluated and reviewed by multiple accrediting agencies, review boards and has had numerous statistical analyses to support the reliability and validity of this assessment over the last 50+ years.
