Position Title:  (2 positions) Forest Program Assistant & Roadless and Clean Water Campaign Organizer

Description:

Forest Program Assistant
Assist Forest Program Director in the defense of ancient forests their wildlife and the water they produce by challenging logging, halting road construction and restoring natural fire regimes. This person will assist with research and document acquisition regarding forest management, forest policy and the latest forest science. This job involves working with state and federal agencies including, when necessary, writing comments appeals and will include some involvement in our strategic litigation program.
Time required: suggested 2-3 months, 20-40 hours week
Skills Required:
. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
. Research skills
. Understanding of conservation policies and laws

Roadless and Clean Water Campaign Organizer
Work with our forest program to mobilize support for protection of  streams and rivers within all roadless forests in New Mexico and other  western states. This job primarily involves organizing communities and stakeholders as well as fieldwork to obtain photographs of streams and rivers within roadless forests of NM and AZ.
Time required: 2-3 months in the summer, prefer full-time

. Outstanding verbal communication skills
. Coursework or experience with aquatic and forest ecology

Founded in 1989, Forest Guardians has emerged as a results-driven group with a proven record of defending and preserving threatened southwestern wildlife and ecosystems. Our approach to conservation features a potent combination of scientific analysis, strategic litigation to enforce existing environmental laws, and efforts to reform misguided public polices.

Mission:
Forest Guardians seeks to protect and restore the native wildlands and wildlife of the American Southwest through fundamental reform of public policies and practices.

Our goals are to protect and restore the native biological diversity and watersheds of the American Southwest; educate and enlist citizens to support protection of the forests, rivers, deserts and grasslands of this arid region; advocate for the principles of conservation biology in plans to restore degraded ecosystems and watersheds; enforce and strengthen environmental laws; support communities in efforts to protect their land and to practice and promote sustainable use of natural resources.
