Green Partners

Student interactions with both the natural and built environments abound throughout all aspects of campus life, from the grounds and facilities to academics to extracurricular student activities. MHC's Green Partners, listed below, offer many opportunities for students to get involved in environmental issues on campus.

Academic Majors on the Environment
Do you want to study the environment? Then check out the earth and environment and biological sciences departments: home to environmental studies, geology, geography, and biology majors, but don't stop there. Anthropology, history, chemistry, economics, and many other departments contribute to the environmental studies major and offer courses with a focus on environmental issues.

Botanic Garden
The Botanic Garden maintains a diverse, living plant collection that enhances teaching and research. The plant collection thrives in the campuswide arboretum, the Talcott Greenhouse, and in numerous gardens on campus.

Center for the Environment
In its programs, the Center for the Environment brings together faculty, students, staff, and the wider community to explore the intersections of academic studies, environmental issues, cross-cultural dialogue, and responsible citizenship.

Energy
Facilities Management is dedicated to improving the efficiency of buildings and systems and promoting energy conservation both to offset rising energy costs and reduce MHC's emissions footprint.

Environmental Action Coalition (EAC)
Do you want to join fellow students in their passion for the environment? EAC (pronounced eek) educates and engages the community in local and global ecological responsibility through events, long-term campaigns, and creative publicity.

Environmental Stewardship
MHC's environmental stewardship program works to reduce the environmental footprint of College operations. The program coordinates campus efforts with student ECO-reps who serve as liaisons between students and the administration. The program also encourages office safety and green practices (on-campus access) for all employees.

Recycling
MHC is committed to waste reduction and recycling. Every year about 200 tons of paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans are recycled. Join the numerous opportunities for recycling located throughout the campus.

Student Energy Conservation
The Kill-a-Watt Competition, one of the nation's oldest programs for reducing college students' energy consumption, measures each dorm's energy use compared to the previous year. Prizes go to the winning dorms.
