Barbara Moakler Byrne '76

2006–2011

Barbara Byrne is a vice chairman of Lehman Brothers, the leading global investment bank.  She is the first woman to achieve this senior executive position at Lehman Brothers in the 155-year history of the firm.  Ms. Byrne, a 26-year veteran of Lehman Brothers Investment Banking Division, is credited for her role in developing longstanding partnerships with major corporate clients on behalf of Lehman Brothers.

Based in New York, Ms. Byrne is a member of the Investment Bank's Senior Client Council and is responsible for leading Lehman Brothers' relationship with a diverse group of major corporate clients, including GE, IBM, EMC, Altria, ADP, HP, Cisco, and Williams among others.  Over the course of her 25-year career, she has led the Lehman Brothers team in designing and executing multiple complex strategic assignments including the first simultaneous IPO/spinoff executed in 1988 by Burlington Northern/Burlington Resources, the first tracking stock recapitalization for USX in 1991, the merger of Digital Equipment with Compaq in 1998, the formation of the Marathon Ashland Petroleum joint venture in 1998, the acquisition of Data General in 1999 and Documentum in 2003 by EMC, and the complex liquidity restructuring of Williams in a dramatic liquidity rescuing series of financings and divestitures from 2002 through 2005.

Ms. Byrne participates in industry conferences as a forum leader on strategic issues as well as trends.  She is a frequent speaker on behalf of women in business, finance, and leaderships.  In addition, she has provided commentary on strategic financial restructurings for such news organizations as Fortune, Forbes, Money Line, and CNBC.

Ms. Byrne graduated from Mount Holyoke College magna cum laude in 1976 with a degree in Economics. She resides in Princeton, New Jersey, with her husband, Tom Byrne, and their four children, Meaghan 18, Erin 15, Brendan 14, and Kelly 11.
