Eliot House lounge

Eliot House is Mount Holyoke
College's home for religious and spiritual activity.
Eliot House lounge,
a large and colorful central living room, is in almost constant
use. A typical
week might find the lounge used for Israeli dancing, the Hindu Diwali
festival, Jumma lunch with the Muslim community, a Protestant Council
of Deacons meeting, an evening gathering of Unitarian Universalist
students, and a "Faith and the Environment" luncheon.
Eliot House is also
home base for the offices of the College chaplains and the dean
of religious life. It houses a small kosher/halal kitchen; a nonkosher
kitchen; the Muslim Prayer Room; Wa-Shin-An, the Japanese teahouse
and meditation garden; a large comfortable lounge with piano, fireplace,
terrace, and kitchen; and a small conference room (available for
reservation by any member of the College community). Events
can be scheduled in these facilities by calling X2054.
Built in 1961, Eliot
House was named for Dr. Frederick May Eliot, trustee of the College
between 1940 and 1958. The Meditation Garden and Room were redesigned
in 1984, and were dedicated as Wa-Shin-An.
