“I had thought about English as one of my possible majors when I came to Mount Holyoke and I had an extraordinary class my first semester. It was with Eugene Hill. He really made us look at the text; made us look at the stories themselves. With one sentence you could have so many meanings; so many different possibilities; so many expressions conveyed to you. It comes with music as well, because one musical phrase can be determined in so many ways and there’s obviously no right answer. So the two interests may seem rather wide, but they definitely are very closely tied together. The class that I’m taking this semester with Louise Litterick has confirmed my desire to have music become part of my life, to remain a part of my life. I think it’s great to be indecisive, not to just set your mind on one track and discover five years later, twenty years later, that you hadn’t really taken the most out of your life or that you made a mistake. So this is why I’m a double major—because I have so many interests—so just really being able to look at something in depth while having a different counterbalancing interest has really opened up my options for me.”
