Welcome

Kendade Hall, center of
the unified science complex
In a time when science remains a male-dominated field, Mount Holyoke
is actively committed to women in science. Between one-quarter and
one-third of our students currently major in science or mathematics—double
the proportion of women who major in science or math at comparable
coeducational institutions. With 50 faculty members, the sciences
claim more than one-quarter of the total faculty at Mount Holyoke,
and the College boasts a high number of tenured women faculty in
science as well.

At Mount Holyoke, students work with advanced science equipment
that at other schools is often reserved for graduate students. Students
here get hands-on experience, sometimes starting from their first
year, using such instrumentation as scanning and transmission electron
microscopes, NMR spectrometers, a confocal scanning laser microscope,
and complete video microscopy capabilities.
