Instructor: Alan Durfee
Lectures: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:00--9:50 in Clapp 401.
Fourth Hour: Friday 2:15--3:05 in Clapp 401. The fourth hour is used for for discussing homework problems, etc. You are not required to attend these discussion sections. (The fourth hour may be rescheduled.)
Text: Single Variable Calculus, Fourth Edition, by James Stewart. The basic material of the course is contained in Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 7.2--7.4. (Note: There may or may not be a disk with the book. We are not planning to use it, though it has some nice demonstrations which we may look at.)
Homework: Homework can be handed in during class or put in the envelope outside my office door. Graded homework can be picked up any time from the other envelope there. Homework can be redone and handed in again, if done promptly (ie, within a few days). The graders reserve the right not to accept redone homework that is too late.
Graders: TBA
Technology: We will use either graphing calculators or the computer programs which are available on the computers in rooms 401, 402, 420 and 422.
Quizzes and Tests: Every Friday class with start with a brief ten or fifteen minute quiz. The topics on the quiz will be announced the previous Wednesday. There will be two tests (Friday October 5 and Friday November 9) and a (self-scheduled) final examination. The tests will finish at 9:50; you may start them as early as 8:00. All quizzes and tests are closed book. If you are unable to take a quiz or test for any reason, you should consult with me, preferably beforehand. (You may call my answering machine at x2299 at any time, day or night.) They can always be taken early. Tests taken late for reasons other than illness will have points deducted from your score.
Final project: The class will end with a final project. Students will be divided into groups of two or three to work on an assigned project, which they will present to the class during the last two days of classes.
Evening help sessions: TBA, but probably Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 10:00 PM in Clapp 401, 402 or neighboring rooms.
Grading: Each test is 100 points, the final examination is 100 points, and each quiz is 10 points. Homework is 100 points, and the final project is 100 points.
Projects: Here are examples of projects. Some of these will be done in class, some will be homework assignments, and some can be done as a final project.
