Instructor: Alan Durfee
Lectures: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00--10:50, Clapp 401. Fourth hour: Tues 10:00--10:50, Clapp 401.
The fourth hour will be used used for discussion homework problems and other topics. In particular we will do some reviewing of the mathematics required for calculus, such as the basic properties of trigonometric, expontial and logarithmic functions. You do not have to come, but you may want to attend when we discuss some of the above topics since this will not be done in class.
Text: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Single Variable, Fifth Edition, by James Stewart. You may use the fourth edition if you want, but the page numbers and other things are different from the fifth and you will have to check this with someone who has the fifth edition.
Homework: Homework can be handed in during class or put in the envelope outside my office door. Homework is due by 5 pm on the due date. Late homework will have points deducted from the score. Graded homework can be picked up any time from the other envelope on my bulletin board. Homework can be redone and handed in again; the higher score will count. Redo's are due two weeks after the assignment date.
Graders:
Technology: You should have a scientific calculator (one able to calculate trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions). Graphing calculators are useful, but we will learn the computer program GraphCalc, an alternative to graphing calculators. Exam problems requiring a graphing calculator (or GraphCalc) will be on the take-home part of the test.
Quizzes and Tests: Most friday classes will start with a brief quiz. The topics on the quiz will be announced the previous Wednesday. There will be two tests (TBA) and a (self-scheduled) final examination. All quizzes and tests are closed book. If you are unable to take a quiz or test for any reason, you should consult with me, preferably beforehand. (You may call my answering machine at x2299 at any time, day or night.) They can always be taken early. Tests taken late for reasons other than illness will have points deducted from your score.
Placement test: Everybody who has not done so should take the placement test. This should be done on or before Friday Sept 13. You can get the test from Laurie Kamins in the Math Office, Clapp 415. (You can also email her at lkamins.)
Evening help sessions: Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 10:00 PM in Clapp 401, 402 or neighboring rooms.
Grading: Each test is 100 points, the final examination is 100 points, and each quiz is about 10 points. One quiz will be dropped. Homework is 100 points.
