Spring 2004

Instructor: Alan Durfee

Lectures: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 1:15--2:05, (MW in Clapp 402, F in Clapp 401). Fourth hour: MW 2:05-2:30, Clapp 402.

The fourth hour will be used used for discussion homework problems and other topics.

Text: Calculus, Early Transcendentals, Single Variable, Fifth Edition, by James Stewart. You may use the fourth edition if you want, but the page numbers and other things are different from the fifth and you will have to check this with someone who has the fifth edition.

Homework: Homework can be handed in during class or put in the envelope outside my office door. Homework is due by 5 pm on the due date. Late homework will have points deducted from the score. Graded homework can be picked up any time from the other envelope on my bulletin board. Homework can be redone and handed in again; the higher score will count. Redo's are due two weeks after the assignment date.

Graders:

Technology: Graphing calculators are useful but are not required.

Quizzes and Tests: Most friday classes will start with a brief quiz. The topics on the quiz will be announced the previous Wednesday. There will be two tests (TBA) and a (self-scheduled) final examination. All quizzes and tests are closed book. If you are unable to take a quiz or test for any reason, you should consult with me, preferably beforehand. (You may call my answering machine at x2299 at any time, day or night.) They can always be taken early. Tests taken late for reasons other than illness will have points deducted from your score.

Evening help sessions: Sunday through Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 10:00 PM in Clapp 401, 402 or neighboring rooms.

Grading: Each test is 100 points, the final examination is 100 points, and each quiz is about 10 points. One quiz will be dropped. Homework is 100 points.
