All of the class datasets are stored on the campus network. You can access them, read-only, using the following procedure (this works on campus PC's only):
Here's what you have to do:
1. Before you start an S-Plus session, you need to map a network drive.
2. Map a network drive by right-clicking on the Network Neighborhood
icon on the Windows desktop, and selecting Map Network Drive...
from the pull-down menu. The following dialog box appears:
Accept the default Drive letter (in this example, it is H:), but remember it!
In the Path box, enter \\ambr\pecology
and then press the OK button.
3. Begin your S-Plus session.
4. All datasets will be in a folder on the drive you just mapped (for example, H:), called biostatistics data 2001. Each dataset and associated meta-data will be stored under the student author's name. For example, Magdalena's dataset on MHC's climate is called Magdalena_data and her description of the dataset is called Magdalena_metadata. Datasets will be stored as ASCII text (.txt) or as Microsoft Excel (.xls) files.
5. To work with these files, you should first make a working copy for yourself (one that you can both read and write). You should import your working copy into an S-Plus data frame (or into other statistical packages).
6. Once you've imported the dataset into S-Plus, you can use it as you would any other S-Plus data frame.
7. When you exit S-Plus, do not save the changed Object Browser.
