COURSE REQUIREMENTS (Anforderungen):

In addition to four weekly class meetings, students are required to attend a weekly conversation lab (live lab). Classes meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Sign-up sheets will be circulated in class. Check there to see where lab sections are meeting. Labs will begin the week of September 15th

The instructor will speak mostly German in class; at times you will not understand every word. Do not be distressed by this keep listening for words you know. Gradually, you will understand more and more if you make the effort to listen carefully each day. Pay attention also to what fellow students are saying. A good language learner is willing to guess and to accept the uncertainty of not understanding every word.

Approximately every two weeks there will be a quiz on one chapter of the textbook (based on the material covered in class, on written and computer homework, and later on readings).  There will also be a MIDTERM and a FINAL EXAM. Make-up exams will be given only in case of an emergency. Unannounced mini-quizzes may be given at any time (these are most likely to include vocabulary as well as grammar topics.)

You can find general homework assignments on the website. Students will do some of their homework online -- grammar and other web exercises are linked to the online syllabus and available on the class web site.  However, additional worksheets (grammar exercises, reading assignments, etc.) may be distributed in class. The instructor will let you know when the assignments are due.

As part of your homework you will be doing dictations that correspond to chapters in Neue Horizonte. The entire audio program is available ONLINE (accessible on campus only):

Attendance is mandatory. Make sure to come to class on time. In case of an emergency, contact another person in your class before the next session (to share notes). Let your instructor know as well. Unexcused absences will be reflected in your final grade of the course. The same applies for your lab sessions. Students are expected to participate regularly (in class and in live lab) and to hand in written & online Web homework ON TIME!!! Homework will be graded √+, √, or √-. If you receive a √- redo the assignment and turn it in to your instructor.

GRADE: 25% Quizzes; 10% Midterm & 15% Final; 20% Class attendance and participation; 20% Homework (computer & written); 10% Attendance and participation in Live Lab.
