History of the Blackstick Review

The Blackstick Review has its origins in a literary society that existed at Mount Holyoke from 1909 until 1961. Their constitution stated that their purpose was “to encourage interest in things literary, attempts of members to write, and intelligent and impartial criticism of these.” The members organized public lectures and brought guest speakers to Mount Holyoke, including T. S. Eliot in 1933. The name Blackstick comes from a story by William Makepeace Thackeray called “The Rose and the Ring.” Allison Trzop ’04 discovered the society in the archives, and the students of English 303 have since published a magazine by the same name.
