Guide to Lab 2

QR FALL 2002

 

PART A

 

1.On toolbar click on “transform”.


 

 


2. On the menu that drops down click on “recode”.

3.Another toolbar appears, click on “into different variables”.                                                      

4.A window “recode into different variables” should appear.

5.Use the left arrow button on the screen to move the variable that you wish to recode.


6.Click on the button “old and new values”.                                                                                            

 


                                                                                                                                                                                   

7. Another window, “recode into different variables: old and new values” should open.

8.Adjust the values of the variable according to the shape of the distribution (check out your histograms from last week and talk to your lab partner).

9.After each value change (have to fill in information for both old and new variable) click “add”.

10. Repeat step 9 until you the values of the new variable are complete.

11. Click on “continue”.


 

 


12. You will return to the window, “recode into different variables”.

13.Name your new variable in the box “output variable” and click on the “Change” button

14. Click on ok”.

15. Repeat steps 1-14 for each variable you wish to recode.

 

PART B

 

1.On the toolbar click on “analyze”.

2.A menu will appear, click on “descriptive statistics”.

3.Another menu will drop down, click on “crosstabs”.

 


                                                                                                                                   

4.A window, “crosstabs”, will open.

5.Place a variable in the “row” box using the left arrow button.

6.Place a variable in the “column” box using the left arrow button.

Hint: Which variable is independent?  Which is dependent?

7.Click on “cells”.

8.Choose which way you want your crosstab to be percentaged.


9.Click on “ok”.

 


10. An output window should appear.


 

 

 


PART C

 

1.Refer to the guide for lab 1 if you need help creating a bar graph (click on “graph”, click on “interactive”, click on “bar”, etc.).

 

2. The only extra info you need is that in the Bar Graph Window, you need to remove the “$count” variable on the vertical axis which is an SPSS default and replace it with mdfam_in

 

 

PART E

 

Good luck with the optional extra.
