[1] From Census 2000 Summary File 3 (SF 3), Sample Data,
released May 2002. Summary File 3 presents detailed population and housing data
(such as place of birth, education, employment status, income, value of housing
unit, year structure built) collected from a 1-in-6 sample and weighted to
represent the total population. There are 1356 census tracts in the data set.
Five tracts were deleted. 1 tract had no data on population or housing, 3
tracts had no data on housing, 1 tract had no data on median family income.
They were: 820802: 15 Hampshire (no population on housing), 150100: 25 Suffolk
(no housing), 714100: 27 Worcester (no housing), 525300: 23 Plymouth (no
housing), 738400: 27 Worcester (no income).

[3] Data on race and ethnicity collected by the US Census have been the subject of heated controversy, especially in the last two decades. For a recent history of changes in census classifications of racial and ethnic groups, see http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/briefs.html
[4] The race variable is coded, Black, White and Other. The Other category contains people who identify as Native American, Eskimo, Asian, and Pacific Islander and Other, as well as people who affiliated with more than one race. Because of the generality of these race categories, it is likely that this classification under-estimates the size of minority populations who identify as more than one race. For more detail, see note #3.
[5] Note, the census defines Race and Hispanic origin as “two separate concepts therefore Hispanics may be of any race or races” http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/race/racefactcb.html
