We
focused on questions 2 (how have political opinions changed), question 5 (whether
or not the members considered themselves privileged for being able to choose
between a career and a family) and question 11 (the biggest difference between
Mount Holyoke when they attended and Mount Holyoke now).
Overall, the alumnae we interviewed felt very privileged that they had the chance
to choose between a career and a family. Although each of them eventually married
and had children, they were able to find careers which related to what they
had majored in.
Some of the differences between then and now include:
- The sign-out process (all students had to sign out before they were able to
leave campus), they had curfews (most had to be in by 11:30 on Friday night)
and they did not have cars (many of them depended on boyfriends who had cars)
-Freshmen were assigned to rooms with roommates of the same religion
-There was only one African American and one Pakistani girl in their class
-They had social hang-out spots such as the CI (College Inn) and the "Greasy
Spoon." It was also common for many of them to eat with or invite faculty
members to eat with them.
-Same sex relations were completely forbidden and were never spoken of. Those
who were caught having same-sex relationships faced expulsion. One of the alumnae
who we interviewed had a secret relationship with another female off campus.
Changes in political opinions:
-They were reprimanded for having liberal views
-There was only one television on the entire campus which limited their access
to the news, etc. In this sense, the alumnae said that they felt isolated from
everyone else.
-Not as encouraged to be aware as we are now.
