Alumnae Relatives
Over twenty percent of the class of 1955 had an alumnae relative recorded on their yellow card. Given lower college enrollment rates for women compared to men in the early part of the 20th century this is a high proportion. For elite women, there was a sentiment that those who went to college went to “certain schools” and often this led to several family members attending the same women’s college. Still, many Mount Holyoke students in the 1950’s were the first of the women in their family to attend college and therefore the first to attend MHC.
