
325s. Senior Seminar General description: This seminar is designed to explore the nature of our field of inquiry in theory and practice. We explore such questions as: What does German Studies mean? What is interdisciplinary work? What role does literature play in culture studies? What is the relationship between language and the construction of culture? What meanings have been attributed to the terms "culture" and "civilization"? Texts from a variety of disciplines. Students write term papers on topics related to their major field(s) of interest. Prerequ. sr; 12 credits including 1 300-level course; non-seniors

From the Kaiser to Hitler: Berlin 1871-1933 in Films and Other Texts We will investigate Berlin’s role from the Gründerjahre to the end of the Weimar Republic, a period of unprecedented economic growth, scientific development, political and cultural change, by studying documents from history, politics, science, philosophy, literature and the arts. Dependent upon student interest, topics may include: multiculturalism in Berlin: the integration of the French Huguenots;
Jewish culture between assimilation and anti-Semitism; bourgeoisie and
proletariat: the Social Democratic movement and social security legislation;
imperialism and colonialism; literature, theatre and film in Berlin: Realism,
Naturalism, and the beginnings of Modernism; Expressionist Theatre and
Classic German Cinema; the bourgeois and proletarian women’s movements;
youth and the Wandervogel movement; economic boom and cultural malaise;
Humboldt University and the scientific revolution; architecture and
art: monumentalism and social criticism. Works may include selections about
and by the following: Bismarck, August Bebel, Friedrich Ebert, Gustav Stresemann;
Theodor Mommsen, Max Weber; Friedrich Nietzsche; Theodor Fontane, Gerhart
Hauptmann, Heinrich Mann, Georg Kaiser, Alfred Döblin, Bertolt Brecht;
Helene Lange, Rosa Luxemburg; Max Planck; art by Heinrich
Zille, Käthe Kollwitz, Wilhelm Busch, and Ernst Barlach; films:
Der Hauptmann von Köpenick, Berlin: Sinfonie einer Großstadt,
Metropolis, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Cabaret, and documentary materials.
Students may have the opportunity of undertaking a research and study
trip to Berlin during March vacation.
Students will have the opportunity of composing their semester projects
as multimedia Web projects.

This course is required of all senior majors and fulfills a 300-level
major requirement in the 19th or 20th century, dependent on work pursued
for the semester project.
