1. Exam option: In consultation with class participants who
elect the final exam option, I will develop a set of exam questions
which will allow you to reflect and synthesize readings, films,
and lectures from the
class. Questions will be handed out on May 1 and exams, no more
than 8 double-spaced typed pages,
will be due on May 8.
2. Group presentation of a scene from an African play: I would like to have the class experience either Nigerian drama, such as we will read about in Karin Barber's essay, or Ghanaian Concert Party: texts are available in Karin Barber's West African Popular Theatre, which will be on reserve. I will also consider proposals from class participants regarding presentation of scenes from other African plays. Scenes should be well-prepared and well-executed, and must be presented on the pre-arranged day.
3. Groups of class participants may wish to teach a segment of the class. I will be grateful if qualified students offer to teach Senegalese mbalax, or other popular dance forms. A presentation on AIDS in popular music would also be welcome, and I am open to suggestions for other possible class segments. Teachers of class segments should well-prepared, material should be engaging and substantive, and it must be presented on the pre-arranged day. Please consult Jennifer Kyker in preparing a class presentation.
4. Groups of class participants may prepare a web page related
to the content of the course. The page should pose and answer
an interesting question, have substantive content, and should
include appropriate
visual images and sound.
