Course Requirements

1. Attendance at all classes is mandatory; attendance will be noted.

2. Reading assignments must be completed before the class for which they are assigned. Typed or neatly handwritten responses to the questions in the syllabus associated with each week's reading should be brought to class each week. They will be collected and you will get them back (sometimes with comments) the following week. Late reading responses will not be accepted.

3. Three- to five- page papers are due at the beginning of class on February 28, and in my office by 5:00pm on March 31 . No late papers will be accepted. Jennifer Kyker will hold office hours during the week before papers are due for class members who want help with writing.

4. Class participants will be required to identify the names and locations of African nations and capital cities in a map quiz on February 7.

5. Class participants will choose among the following final grade options: 1) a take home final exam, due on May 8, 2) a group staging of a scene from an African play, presented to the class on May 1, 3) a student-taught segment of the class, presented at an appropriate moment in the semester, 4) a group-produced web page that expands on an aspect of the course content, due on May 1. These options are further explained on the last page of the syllabus.

Grades will be determined by the following:

Zairois history in art paper 20%
Choose one of the following
African Musician paper 20%
Portfolio of accumulated reading responses
turned in at the end of the semester
Final project or exam 20%
