Renewable Energy - Photovoltaic, Wind, Geothermal and Hydroelectric

The term “Alternative Energy” is indicative of any energy source outside of the traditional ones such as gas, petroleum, nuclear etc. Not all alternative energy sources are renewable, i.e. sources of energy that replenish themselves, and vice versa. Solar, wind, geothermal are all alternative and renewable sources - however, hydroelectric power though renewable is considered traditional and not alternative. Of all the non-fossil fuel energy sources, traditional or renewable, hydroelectric and biomass hold the largest share of the market – a combined value of 6% in 2002 which constitutes a 14% decrease from the year 1999. Solar, wind and geothermal together account for less than 1% of total energy consumption.
