Grading of Lab Reports
Revised 2/28/05
The following elements are taken into consideration. Relative weights for each are given, along with a brief description of the categories.
Mathematical Correctness and Ingenuity (40) This category ranges from the verbal descriptions of examples and definitions to the arithmetic calculations you perform; from algebraic simplifications and statements you make to graphical depictions that you use; and, finally, to the logic used in your arguments and proofs.
Mathematical Thoroughness (30) You should account for and incorporate as many results as you can from the Lab Manual exercises, questions, and discussions, as well as from the experiments you performed; if there are "loose ends," note them, and describe how you would address them if you had more time.
Readability and Coherence of Descriptions and Arguments (30) Along with general ease of reading, this category includes the correct use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation; appropriate use of tables, graphs, and examples; and correct type-setting using LaTeX. As suggested in class discussion, the paper should be clear, concise, organized, and interesting. Since a mathematics paper often includes tables, graphs, and external references, you should make clear verbal references to these items that appear outside the flow of your exposition. Ideally, you will be able to put something of yourself into your report in thoughtful, reflective, ingenious, entertaining, and/or aesthetically pleasing ways!
