For each of the following, give a direct c.e. Be sure that your c.e. is compelling and as strong as possible. Funny counterexamples will be awarded brownie points and will win the appreciation of the graders and the instructor.

Part I:

1)          Van Gogh created the painting while looking at himself in a mirror.

             Therefore, it is a self-portrait.

2)          The Russian revolution changed Russian society dramatically.

             Lenin played the central role in the Russian revolution.

             Therefore, if Lenin had been killed as a child, Russian society would have been very   different.

3)          Men's claims that their rights are being violated are completely off the wall. No man will be harmed in any way. (Careful: what is the structure of the argument?)

Part II: Give a direct or indirect c.e., whichever you can make most compelling and strong.

1)         Rolls-Royces are very expensive. Margaret owns a Rolls-Royce. Therefore, Margaret must be wealthy.

2)         The recent SGA elections attracted a turnout of only 9% of the students. Therefore, its results should be overturned and the elections repeated.

3)         The world would be better off if racism in South Africa were ended.  The only way to accomplish this is by imposing an economic boycott on South Africa.  Therefore that is what the U. S. should do.

4)         Music is very soothing to the nerves.  Therefore if you want to calm your nerves, you should put on some music.
