You notice that although the article is not required in English it is mandatory to use one in French. The type of articles used in these examples are called indefinite articles and partitive articles and are different from the definite article (LE,LA,LES) which always refer to something specific. Observe the difference between:

Vous avez la chaise SPECIFIC the one we talk about earlier, the one that is in my bedroom

Vous avez une chaise UNSPECIFIED any chair will do, I need one

Tu as l'argent? SPECIFIC the one we need for the trip, the money I gave you earlier

Tu as de l' argent?UNSPECIFIED Do you have( some) money?

Don't let yourself intimidated by the terminology and use the chart bellow to decide what you want to use between the verb avoir and the noun

-C- You have more than one of something (English some, a few), use DES J'ai des tables et il a des chaises

-D- You (don't) have a lot of something, use (PAS)BEAUCOUP DE, D' Il a beaucoup de courage Ils n'ont pas beaucoup d'énergie

-E- you don't have any of something , there is/are none of something, use PAS DE, D' Tu as de l' argent? Non je n'ai pas d' argent Do you have money , no I don't have any Il a un frère? Non, il n'a pas de frère. Does he has a brother? Non he has no brother Elle a du travail? Non elle n'a pas de travail does she has work, no she has no work Vous avez de la famille? Non je n'ai pas de famille Do you have family? No I don't have family Pas de is the negation of une/une/ des/ de la/ du/ de le

-F- What you have is a specific object, (English the) use LE, LA, LES, L' Tu as les clefs (keys)? Do you have the keys

C- When used with a plural adjective that precedes a noun des becomes de.

Il a des amis il a de bons amis

Elle a des meubles Elle a de nouveaux meubles

D-The same choice is to be made with other expressions of quantity. The one in bold are the most commonly used
