Using verbs of movement

Read this little story and observe the uses of the verbs of movement:

Je rendais visite à (I was visiting)des amis français qui habitent à Paris. Je voulais visiter(visit) le louvre.je voulais partir (leave)vers 9 heures mais j'ai quitté (left)la maison asssez tard vers midi et je suis allé (went)à pied jusqu'au Louvre. Quand je suis arrivé,(arrived) je suis entré (came in)dans le musée et j'ai découvert que je n'avais pas mon portefeuille. Je suis (set out again)donc reparti chez mes amis qui m'ont dit: "tu es déjà revenu?"(you are back). Je leur ai expliqué la situation. Ils m'ont dit:" Ne rentre (come back)pas trop tard ce soir, on sort,(going out) tu viens (are you coming)avec nous n'est pas?". J'ai accepté et je suis reparti vers le Louvre avec mon portefeuille cette fois et pour changer je suis passé par (I went through)la rue de Rivoli.Au guichet du Louvre, on m'a dit" Tiens, vous êtes revenu!". Cela fera une bonne histoire à raconter quand je retournerai aux (go back) USA.

Visiter quelque chose

To visit a place
Make sure you make the difference between to visit a place and to visit someone as there are two different ways to express it. Also note that it is incorrect to say that you visited a country, instead say: Je suis allé en Suisse, au Sénégal etc'

Rendre visite à quelqu'un

To visit someone
Aller voir quelqu'un is also another way to express to visit someone: Je suis allé voir ma cousine Berthe ce week-end

Partir

To leave
Make sure you make a different between to leave a place or someone or to simply leave as there are to different ways to express it .

Quitter un lieu

To leave a place someone

Also note that the verb quitter doesn't mean to quit

I quit my job: J'ai donné ma démission

I quit smoking: j'ai arrêté de fumer

I quit: j'abandonne

To go
Uses are basically the same the same than in English

Arriver

To arrive
Uses are basically the same than in English

Entrer

To go in

Uses are basically the same than in English

Entrer à l'université, entrer à l'école normal, entrer au lycée

Repartir

To set out again, go off again, start out again

Make sure to make the difference between repartir , rentrer, revenir and retourner (see these verbs)

Repartir is almost like a false start or what you do when to stop frequently and start out again

Rentrer

To come , go in again

To return home, come home

Make sure to make the difference between rentrer, revenir, repartir and retourner (see these verbs)

Most of the time rentrer is associated with home, to come home(your house, your childhood village or your country of origin).

To go out/ to come out of

Venir

To come
Uses are basically the same than in English

Passer par

To go through
Uses are basically the same than in English

Retourner

To go back

Make sure to make the difference between retourner , rentrer, repartir, revenir and retourner (see these verbs)

Retourner is to go back where you have already been , in the story, Le Louvre.
