To decide which preposition: à, de pour, avec etc. comes after the verb can sometime be a tricky task when learning French. Verbs that are not followed by a preposition are said to have a DIRECT construction, and those that are followed by a preposition are said to have an INDIRECT construction. The problem is that a verb with a direct construction in English is not necessary a verb with a direct construction in French and vice-versa which is of course a source of numerous mistakes. Bellow you'll find a useful list of commonly used French verbs which construction differs from English.
Verbs that are followed by à in French but are not followed by a preposition in English:
