Projects

Look a the syllabus for the due date of these projects. Each project is a mini-research project. You'll do the project and write a scientific article on the project. You should pick a journal that would publish each type of project and write the article in the style required by that journal. When you turn in your article, you should include a cover letter indicating the journal you are submitting to and why this article should be published in that journal. You also need to include the instructions for authors and reviewers provided by that journal. Look for these in the journal's web site and issues of the journal. If necessary, contact the editor. Projects will be discussed in lecture and class results will be posted on our ella site.

Project 1: Structure of beryllium oxide and its surfaces

Project 2: Hydroxylation of the BeO(100) and (001) surfaces

Project 3: Search for BeO dissolution products

Project 4: Finding the most probable beryllium complexes in solution at lysosomal digestive fluid pH

In this final project, you'll learn about how to use Mathematica and then use it on the example problem described in the MINTEQ manual on page 9. The manual describes how to use treat this kind of problem. We'll do this treatment using Mathematica language. There is no paper due for this final project but you should think about how we could apply this technique on to the beryllium problem and discuss those possibilities in your class term paper.
