Smectite Group Minerals

Smectite group minerals have expandable structures that allow them to accommodate water or even organic molecules between their structural layers. On Earth, they commonly occur in soils.

The photo to the left is representative of this mineral group; however, it is not the same sample on which spectra listed below were measured.
