The Sainte-Chapelle, the king's chapel within the walls of the Palais de la Cité, was begun in 1241 and dedicated on 26 April 1248. Probably located on or near the site of an earlier chapel, the new structure was built to house the relics of Christ's Passion, the Crown of Thorns, the True Cross, nails, and the sponge, which Louis IX had purchased from the Byzantine emperor in 1239 and 1241.
