Each character in the story represents an aspect of the political and social spectrum of France in 1945.

This is a part of French history which remains still in great part unexplored, and many squeletons will probably be left lying in their closets for ever -simply because too many prominent figures have been compromised in the political intrigues of the "libération"

	the French police supported Pétain from 1940 to 1945 enforcing the orders of Vichy such as in the case of the arrestation of Parisian Jews in 1940. In 1945, after the "liberation of France" they stand ready to carry out orders from the Communist party or influential people like Monglat.

	Gaigneux: Ouvrier , bon père de famille, communiste sincère, homme sensible qui croit sincèrement qu'une société communiste détient la formule du bonheur.
	Jourdan: petit bourgeois frustré, homme médiocre qui profite du chaos pour réaliser sa soif de pourvoir.
	Rochard: homme du peuple, dénonciateur de bas-étage.

 

Diversity in class and gender of people who constitute the Right

	Maxime Loin: intellectuel, poète, attiré par l'idéologie fasciste
	Archambault: bourgois, ingénieur, catholique, humaniste torturé
	madame Archambault: bourgoise, catholique, sexualité l'emporte sur l'idéologie
	Watrin: petit bourgois, prof. de lycée, humaniste serein "=néo-Pangloss"
	Léopold: prolétaire, enfant de la balle, ni catholique, ni communiste alcoolique = marginal, adore Andromaque et la poésie
	Andréa, femme de Léopold: prolétaire, enfant de la balle, ni catholique, ni communiste. adore son mari
	Monglat: "une ordure" déçu par la médiocrité intellectuelle de son fils et la sienne., il recherche la puissance dans l'argent. Il "jouit" litéralement du mal qui arrive aux autres. C'est lui qui est responsable de la mort de Léopold, car il craint ses indiscrétions
