Texts and required material:

á        P. Debnar, Elementary Greek through Homer, Part 2 (from professor)

á        Iliad in English, purchased on your own (Suggested translators are: Lattimore, Fagels, Lombardo, or Fitzgerald [poetic, but departs from Homer])

á        *Clyde Pharr, Homeric Greek (*from fall semester)

 

Requirements: you must pass all five requirements to pass the course.

 

1.      20% Class performance (recitations, homework, general participation)

2.      20% Quizzes (some scheduled, some ÒpopÓ reading review quizzes)

3.      20% Exam 1 (beginning of week 5)

4.      20% Exam 2 (around week 9)

5.      20% Exam 2 (Final) (self-scheduled)

 

Important policies:

 

1.     Attendance and participation are required.

That said, you have 3 "free" absences to use for emergencies, minor illnesses, being stranded off campus by a snow storm, and the like. You need not explain these absences, but you should spend them wisely. Each additional unexcused absence will lower your class performance grade by one-half grade. Excused absences are for:

a.      A required, college sponsored activity such as travel for a sports team or a choir performance, or a required  class trip (consult with your professor ahead of time to make-up work).

b.      Extended or severe sickness. (Immediately consult with your professor and class dean).

c.      Other emergencies, if sanctioned by the Dean of the College or the Dean of Studies.

If you are absent, contact another student in the course about what you missed. If you have lingering questions after rereading the assignment, please bring them to office hoursÑor suggest a time for an appointment.
