Bible - Digital Manuscript
"The year 2000 marks the 600th anniversary of the birth of
Johann Gutenberg, the inventor of letterpress printing. ...To celebrate
this anniversary, the State and University Library of Lower Saxony
is presenting its priceless vellum Gutenberg Bible along with many
other examples of European letterpress printing... [T]he Bible,
which was printed in 1454, is made available to a broad international
public on the Internet and as a CD-ROM. All 1282 pages of the two
volumes of the Bible were scanned in at high resolution and processed
for online presentation. This allows the public - in a digital "hands-on"
effect - ...direct access to a priceless work which can normally
only be stored in vaults or only a few pages can be shown during
an exhibition."

Digital
Michelangelo Project
"As an application of [laser rangefinder] technology, a team
of 30 faculty, staff, and students from Stanford University and
the University of Washington spent the 1998-99 academic year in
Italy scanning the sculptures and architecture of Michelangelo.
...Our goal is to produce a set of 3D computer models - one for
each statue, architectural setting, and map fragment we scanned
- and to make these models available to scholars worldwide. The
motivations behind this project are to advance the technology
of 3D scanning, to place this technology in the service of the
humanities, and to create a long-term digital archive of some
important cultural artifacts."
