Instructor: Margaret Robinson
Meetings: Monday, Wednesday 11-12:15 in Clapp 120, Friday 11-11:50 in Clapp 420 and 422.
Books for the class: "In Code: A Mathematical Journey" by Sarah Flannery (with David Flannery), Workman Publishing Company (2001). We will write our own class text. Every Monday and Wednesday a different person will write up the notes and distribute them for the following Monday's class.
Homework: There will be homework assigned for each class and due in the following class meeting. Graded homework can be picked up from the envelope outside my office or in class. Homework can be redone and handed in again, if done promptly (i.e. within a week of getting it back). I reserve the right not to accept redone homework that is too late.
Tests: There will be two tests, and a self-scheduled or take-home final examination. If you are unable to take a test for any reason, you should contact me before the test. (You can email me at robinson any time of the day or night.)
Grading: The homework and class participation make up 25% of your grade, each test is 25%, and the final examination is 25%.
Technology: We will use the computer to calculate messy, lengthy objects and make our ideas more concrete. All the programs are on the computers in Clapp 420, 422, 401, and 402 in the windows directory Math114 to be found on the start menu.
Mid-term examinations are tentatively scheduled for the first week of October and the middle of November.
Notebooks: I want you to keep a 3-ringed notebook for the class. The notebook should have six sections to it.
