(from VHS tapes)
-Before capturing, you must create a folder to save your movies to
-On the local drive (the hard drive of the computer you’re currently using) create a folder for yourself at c:\hist399\[your folder] where the [your folder] is your first name.
-Map the Network drive, by going to “Network Neighborhood” on the desktop, and right clicking. Select “Map Network Drive” and enter \\www\[your email]
-Under ‘courses’, find ‘rschwart’ and beneath that ‘clio.’ There are folders here with your first name listed for saving your completed .rm files.
-First, open the program Studio DV (located on the computers in 311 under the start menu at ‘programs’, then ‘studio DV’ then ‘Studio’.)
-Click on “capture”- It’s the first button on the top left of the program window
-Cue your movie to a bit before you wish to capture
-Line up your movie (via VCR)- you should be seeing it on the little screen on top
right)
-when you’re close to where you want to begin, hit “start capture” (green
button near bottom left)—Remember you can always subtract, but not usually add.)
-hit “capture” in the pop up box
Hit “stop capture” when done with clip
Save this file under the directory on the hard drive (c:\hist399\[your folder])
using a short but meaningful name
-Click “edit” (at top of screen)
-In the album at top you should see images (‘photos’) of the scene you’ve made
-Decide which you want to keep (to facilitate this, use the little t.v. at the top
right)
--Drag scenes you want to keep to the cyan colored section of the screen,
in order (just click and drag)
--To get more than one at a time, hold ‘ctrl’ key as you click, then
drag
--To get several in a row, click the first, then hold ‘shift’ key and
click the last one you want, thereby selecting all, and drag those to the cyan section.
-What is in the cyan editing board is, so far, your movie. To edit this, click on
the small toolbox icon on the editing board’s title bar
-“Trimming” is the term for removing frames from your clip to create a shorter movie. To trim, a scene, trimming from it, click on the picture of it on the editing board and it will appear on the toolbox board. If you move the green or red calipers at either end of the time line, you will remove time from the beginning/end of that section of film.
-Click the ‘make film’ button—third of the top three
-Choose “custom” setting for video, and enter 320X240 for the size and
enter 1500 for data rate
-Choose “custom” setting for audio, and choose 190 kbs for the streaming audio
-Click the green ‘make MPEG file’ button
-Choose folder for it (the one you made at the beginning of this endeavor, on the hard drive, c:\hist399\[your folder]) and
name your file (the program will automatically give your file a suffix, so
you needn’t do it manually)
-hit ‘okay’ and wait—you now have an MPEG movie.
Making a Real Movie
-Go to ‘Real Producer Plus G2’ It will walk you through the steps, using a
‘wizard’
-Click “record from file” and okay
-It will ask for a source file name. Click ‘browse’ and find the mpeg that you just
made in StudioDV, at c:\hist399\[your folder] and then ‘next’
-Enter any info you wish (ie: title, author, etc.) and ‘next’
-Click Single Rate Stream and ‘next’
-Under Target Audience, choose ‘corporate lan’ is chosen and ‘next’
-Under Audio, click ‘voice and background’ and ‘next’
-Under Video, click ‘normal motion’ or ‘sharpest image’ that applies and ‘next’
-Save the completed .rm file in your subdirectory online (where you mapped the drive earlier, saving it at courses\rschwart\clio\[your name] and ‘next’
-Click Finish
At the bottom left of next screen will be ‘recording controls’, click ‘start’
--you now have a .rm file!
You should delete the .avi file from the hard drive you created at the beginning. The .mpeg can stay on the hard drive
Making a Web Page (with Real Producer G2 Plus)
-Click ‘create a web page’
-Enter the .rm you wish to make a page for (hit ‘next’)
-Choose embedded player (hit ‘next’)
-Choose ‘stop and start’ for controls (hit ‘next’)
-Enter caption and position (hit ‘next’)
-Enter file name for your page (hit ‘next’)
-Preview to see the html webpage which contains your video clip
-Finish—you have a web page (.html)
Publishing a Web Page (with Real Producer G2 Plus)
-Click ‘publish a web page’
-Enter page name [eg: myvideo.html] (and ‘next’)
-Choose generic- publishing profile (and ‘next’)
-Be certain ‘stream media clips from standard web server’ is chosen (and ‘next’)
