Edme Goes to Paris: Rustic Virtues Carry the Day

| Having impressed his uncle, Edmond was then sent to Paris to finish his training with a magistrate by the name of Master Molé. Thanks to his master, he soon was introduced to Monsieur Pombelins, a wealthy merchant who had two daughters, Rose and Eugenie.
Not long after, Edme was betrothed, we learn, to the lovely Rose. "You have my Father's blessing"

The happy betrothal was much to the pleasure of Monsieur Pombelins. He had the highest regard for the country lad, for his simple, rustic virtues of honesty, integrity, and diligence were qualities not easily found in the Paris of luxury, corruption, and self-indulgence.
